No more adverts – monetizing with a donate button

I am getting rid of adverts as they feel unnecessary and ineffectual these days. Let me briefly explain the plan.

I have been ridiculously busy of late and most of it has been unsatisfying. I have quite a few clients – who are all utterly fantastic and brilliant – and then a load of random freelance work and ghost-writing. I get a lot of enquiries and commissions to do work as I rank highly on all these sites. Don’t get me wrong, I am not whining about being popular as it keeps me fed and I’m grateful. It is just not particularly fulfilling.

What is more satisfying is writing on my websites and on places like Medium where I can discuss things that interest me. Things like books, TV shows, films, weird history, games, comics and so on. On Medium I can do quirky history, like The gorilla who brought up as a boy in an English village or North Korean 105-floor ‘Hotel of Doom’ Deserted for 30 Years. These stories are fun. But writing on my websites makes bugger all as I don’t have adverts or anything – although you could buy a book!

This website used to make ok money from Google Ads back in the day. Then something chaged and suddenly it was just a few dollars. I do include some affiliate links, if I am reviewing something, but again, it’s a pittance. So, I’m going to put in a donation button and get rid of adverts. That way, readers can help me out and I can focus on what people seem to enjoy. This will also mean I can turn down more work on ghostwriting sites and other places.

Blogging is changing and I need to change with it and not be such a crusty journalist. I am also going to be trying to share short stories and so on. Maybe try out Wattpad, Radish fiction and all of those sorts of places.

I like the idea of patronage. Like Da Vinci and the Medicis. And also, adverts suck. So… without further ado… support the arts… share the wealth… feel the karma… here’s the donate button:
