Indiana Jones 5 won’t replace Indy but there might be a spinoff

Indiana Jones and his goddaughter

The new Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny trailer was released recently and as often happens with films in series I adore, I am anxious – but also hopeful and excited. So it is quite the gamut of emotions.

I’m a HUGE fan of the three Indiana Jones movies and can’t wait for another. Ok, that was an obvious joke, and the fourth one did have its moments. But it also had a lot of shite moments, which the first three didn’t have. I’m still trying to cancel the Shia LaBeouf swinging with CGI monkeys scene from my head. The horror.

Harrison Ford has previously said he wanted to return one final time after Crystal Skull to finish the Indiana Jones story. Just as long as it doesn’t take another 20 years. This is what he said in Empire Magazine:

“I just thought it would be nice to see one where Indiana Jones was at the end of his journey,” Ford explains. “If a script came along that I felt gave me a way to extend the character.”

This is that film.

The last film ended with him getting married – which was nice – and Shia LaBeouf looking like he might take over the role of adventuring action man – which was not. Sorry, but I find him annoying and happily, looking at the excellent cast, that’s not going to happen. (Confirmed here.)

However, the new trailer has led to internet trolls claiming that Indiana Jones / Harrison Ford will be replaced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. This is largely because internet trolls have very little to do and don’t let facts get in their way.

The director, James Mangold, has found this nonsense annoying enough to issue a statement on Twitter.

He goes on to add:

“And please don’t exhaust me pointing out how once in a while a troll is “right”. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now & then. All one has to do is look at set photos & interviews & u get enough info to make wild guesses about a movie plot.

The diff between trolling a-holes & everyone else is they r trying to make $ off your feelings about other films & culture war politics. They push contoversial guesses as coming from “sources” to gin up clicks. Let it go.”

Will there be a spinoff from the Indiana Jones franchise?

What I think might happen is that there might be a spinoff. Ideally with Phoebe Waller-Bridge, because she’s awesome. Bob Iger, the Disney Big Cheese, has said that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will not be the last in the franchise.

Given that it seems highly likely Harrison Ford is done with the franchise, someone has to carry it on. That means a Bond-like reboot, which would be weird, or a new direction. Here is what Iger said:

“We [got] Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones in the film. But then what’s the direction? I’ve had discussions about what the direction is, [but] I don’t want to get into it…

I don’t think it reaches the scale of the universe of Star Wars, but I see making more. It won’t be just a one-off.”

Personally, I am hoping for something like what happened with the Uncharted computer game series – which coincidentally was essentially a modern-day Indiana Jones. In case you aren’t familiar with that – it featured a guy called Nathan Drake who, with various other characters, had a load of Indy-like adventures. He then retired in game four.

But then there was a spinoff called Uncharted: The Lost Legacy that featured two of the women that featured in the original games as the protagonists, with other characters making a comeback. (I reviewed the game here.) It worked brilliantly. This would be a better approach than a Bond or Lara Croft style reboot.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. To end on a high note, here is the trailer:
