Kurzgesagt is one of the best channels on YouTube

I adore Kurzgesagt. Unfortunately, it is hard to recommend to others in real life as I can never remember its name. It means “in a nutshell”, which I can remember but is a bit weird to get people to look that up when you’re trying to persuade someone to check it out. Also, if you put “in a nutshell” into Google translate, it comes out as: in einer nusschale. So I will recommend here instead and use good old copy and paste.

Watch Kurzgesagt, it’s great.

Right. Done. Ok… I’ll explain a bit more.

Kurzgesagt is a science channel that explores really deep themes but explains them in a way that’s really easy to understand. And not just science, it also discusses philosophical, technological, political, and psychological subjects. It uses simple stylised graphics to explain the ideas that give the channel a distinct feel.

In Germany, it is state-sponsored but for the rest of us, it is backed by individuals and donations. At the time of writing, it has 14.7 million subscribers, so I am not alone in liking what they do. Here are some outdated facts:

Kurzgesagt

Enough talk! It is time to provide a sample of Kurzgesagt goodness. Or several, just to give you an idea. I will repeat this at the end but this is their YouTube channel and this is their website.

First up, an explanation of wormholes:

Now a bit of philosophy. This has actually become my philosophy on life. If you don’t like it, I don’t care. That’s the joy of Optimistic Nihilism!

And finally, now that you’re full of optimism, how about – ‘Why Alien Life Would be our Doom – The Great Filter’

If you like science made fun and easy to understand – but don’t want videos – I would also recommend xkcd. Enjoy. Go science.
