Community is now on Netflix

I don’t know if it was meant to be ironic, what with everyone being stuck inside and not seeing anyone else, but the comedy show Community is now on Netflix (and elsewhere). I had seen the odd episode over the years and it was funny but if you don’t really know the characters, you are missing a lot of the humour. Apart from the name, the timing of adding a very funny and watchable sitcom is obviously pretty perfect given that pretty much everyone in the entire world is currently stuck inside with nothing to do. It is currently trending. Kudos, Netflix.

(I should add that it is on my Netflix feed in Thailand, maybe not yours, but it seems to be on a lot.)

Community is set in a community college in the US. Apparently, they are like universities but seem a lot easier and cheaper to get in. Consequently, they have a higher quotient of madcap characters.

Premise

When a narcissistic, sarcastic lawyer is fired for lying about having a degree, he goes to Greendale Community college to get a genuine degree. He meets a hot lady and forms a study group to get closer to her. She invites a slightly odd friend of her own, who in turn invites a few others to join. The end result is a study group who have very little in common with each other. Chuck in some crazy teachers and hilarity ensues.

Is it worth a watch?

Absolutely yes. I am not going to lie in that I found Community ok, way better than most sitcoms, but a bit slow at first. By the time I was halfway through the first series I was absolutely loving it and it just got better and better. The writing by showrunner Dan Harmon and others is superb. The characters are the main part of the show here and the acting is spot on. I won’t list all the actors here but it has Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Ken Jeong and Chevy Chase, to name but a few.

I won’t go on too much about how funny and ‘meta’ Community can be because writing about it on a device that also has the ability to watch it, is proving distracting. All I can say is, if you are looking for a comedy to binge on during these troubled times, it is something I highly recommend.

As always, here is a trailer. Enjoy.
