Why the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 will do me nicely
I know it doesn’t exist yet but I want one.
I am in the market for a new laptop and the not-yet-existing Surface 4 seems like just the ticket. I have the Microsoft Surface Pro from 2017 and it has been great. I saw the Surface Laptop 3 in a shop the other day and holy shit that thing was nice. And reasonably priced. Especially when compared to the Dell XPS 15 I had been previously eyeing up.
I got the Surface Pro because my ancient Mac Air (2012) was dying. I had bought an iPad Pro (in 2015) in the mistaken belief that it could totally be a laptop replacement. It couldn’t. So I got a Surface Pro thinking it could be a full laptop – it could – and also that could do everything the iPad Pro could do – it couldn’t. I wrote about crushing that disappointment here.
I am starting to realise hybrids aren’t for me. At least not yet. Hurry the fuck up technology. This is a massive shame as the new iPad Pro on its magic floaty stand looks great. Plus, I do a lot of drawing and art and so forth and the iPad Pro with Procreate is the best thing ever. But it sucks for writing in the same way that the Surface sucks for art.
So I am looking at the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4. No touchscreen. Full old-school laptop with a great keyboard and good battery life. I think my Surface can last until then. Its battery is still good for at least 90 minutes. It will weigh a ton but I think my perfect current combo is, sadly, a proper laptop and an iPad Pro. Maybe add a kindle too.
So when is the Surface Laptop 4 coming out?
The others have all come out in October. The new Intel chips come out just before and hopefully, they will all use them as they are better. Currently, the Surface Laptop 3 13.5 inch uses Intel, but the 15 uses AMD or Intel. Hopefully, that will remain or be all Intel. The new chips will allow for ridiculous efficiency and battery life. However, there was some disease or virus or plague or other that may impact delivery. Hopefully not.
I am writing this for those similarly in the market for a new laptop. The new chips that are coming out are going to be great and anyone buying a new laptop right now must be nuts. Just wait till the end of the year. Apple especially, as they will be using their own specially designed chips, which will be cool. Anyone not buying a new laptop or interested in technology, then sorry. I will write about something else next time.
