Reacher TV show gets it right
I finished watching the new Reacher TV series on Amazon last week and really enjoyed it. It stuck close to the first book, which is nice in this day and age. I am currently reading book five of the Wheel of Time and the first series of that differs a lot from the source material and suffers for it.
I have only read one Reacher book from the hugely successful 27-book series by Lee Child – Killing Floor – and that was the one they made. It makes sense to start with book one of a series but often, with thrillers especially, producers opt for what they deem one of the more exciting entries.
I actually quite enjoyed the Tom Cruise films, but they didn’t really capture the feel of Reacher for one well-publicised reason.
Reacher is supposed to huge and intimidating.
He’s built like a brick-shithouse, six-and-a-half feet tall and scary. I like Tom Cruise, and he was great in the films, but was nothing like my mental image. Alan Ritchson, the new fella, is almost exactly what I was thinking.
The story follows the book’s plot beats really closely and it works really well as TV show. The revelations and twists are well done, and the acting is pretty good generally. If you want a decent thriller but haven’t read the books, don’t worry. It doesn’t really matter, and the series is definitely worth a watch.
If you are a Reacher fan and are in two minds about the show, then likewise, give it a shot. I really enjoyed it.
My only gripe with the Reacher TV version was the same as the book. The evidence is so well presented, I worked out what was going on fairly early. So the revelation didn’t exactly blow me away. But I am annoying like that and the book gives you more time to think about it.
Highly recommended – the Reacher TV show is great fun. The pictures also say ‘season 1’ which – call me a detective – implies more.
