How does Fiverr work and is it worth it?
I had heard of Fiverr but assumed – and I think this is logical – that you only got paid a fiver. An American fiver too which is worse. I had signed up 4 years ago to see what the fuss was about, then made that logical jump and didn’t look at Fiverr again until a month ago. Happily, the $5 pay is not the case. I know that a lot of people look down on this kind of writing platform but I was surprised how good it is.
How does Fiverr work if you want to sell your skills?
I signed up and advertised a ‘gig’. This is the kind advert you used to see in a newspaper or yellow pages back in days of yore. My gig was to write or edit work using my oodles of writing experience. Your gig will then appear on a big page with a load of other gigs. There are multiple skills being advertised on the site, like graphic designers, artists, voice-over actors, musicians, you name it. If a client is looking for writers, they will do a search and find results tailored to their needs. It looks like this with my gig on the top left:
If you are in the market for hiring a talented writer, you will likely be drawn to my gig because it looks so nice. If you click on it you will go to this page, where you will see my details:
As you can see you can hire me for a mere $25 for a 500-word article. That might seem low but it will take me roughly an hour to write and I want to get a few decent reviews under my belt. Below this will be my bio and some more expensive options such as $40 and $50 for slightly longer pieces:
In addition, people can get in touch and say what they want and you can tailor a job to your mutual satisfaction. I will admit that my profile looks a bit bad as I had joined 4 years ago and then forgot to do anything on it. However, it hasn’t been too bad as I put this gig up about a month ago and have already gotten work from it.
I had a few inquiries from people that weren’t right for me but I got a couple that were perfect. One purchased from the gig itself – the more expensive option – and the other was a negotiation that eventually ended up being a pretty decent payout. In total, from two articles, I got $200 and they were a great client with interesting topics. Way better than a fiver.
I just thought I would share this as people can be a bit disparaging about Fiverr and it put me off the site for 4 years. But it is actually pretty decent if you put the time in and are prepared to be a bit picky, you can get decent work.
So there you go. Give Fiverr a try if you fancy it. It isn’t just for writers, it is also for – Graphics & Design, Digital Marketing, Video & Animation, Music, Programming and more. I feel like this has been a sponsored post but it really hasn’t. As you can see from the pictures I do actually work on the site occasionally and genuinely think it can be a good earner. Right, with all that said, here’s an ad. Thanks.
